Athletic Director Issues
This page will be updated soon. For now, find most recent info on the Homepage.
In a nutshell, there are 3 issues:
• A.D. Stephen Cass was terminated days after he notified Superintendent of improprieties in his department
• The alleged improprieties, and the administration's lack of addressing them
• The Adminisration's apparent plan to replace Cass by promoting the parking lot attendant to the position

July 23 Letter by George Harris: Ethics lacking in Wayland’s schools
"He wrote, “I told him (the reporter) that I was not interested in getting involved in the larger matter that he was pursuing.” And why not? He was obviously contacted by the reporter as the former class advisor. Here is someone who knows something but doesn’t want to talk about it. Why wouldn’t he speak to the reporter? What was he afraid of? (Yes, I gather the reporter was pushy, but he was obviously trying to get Mr. Schmirer to say something on the record.)"
July 16 Letter from Wayland teacher: Reporter had axe to grind
"Mr. Haddadin continued to press me for a response and I told him that I was not interested in getting involved in the larger matter that he was pursuing. At that juncture, in a lecturing tone, Mr. Haddadin told me that “I had to admit that the evidence against the assistant principal clearly pointed to wrongdoing on his part.” I once again declined comment; Mr. Haddadin said “fine” and hung up on me. It was thus much to my surprise to see a quotation attributed to me stating, “There could be things that were not necessarily done appropriately,” in reference to the actions of Mr. Scott Parseghian. July 22 WVN #604: School Committee hears harsh criticism
"Major themes of Monday’s complaints: The Cass matter is one symptom of a serious, long-standing management problem affecting Wayland High School athletics and other things. The Committee has lost the trust of many people and must exercise leadership."
July 21 Boston Globe: Wayland to assess its high school athletics program
"Cass said the survey doesn’t address the problems he witnessed in the athletic department. “A study’s not going to hold people accountable,” he said. “It’s not going to promote gender equity.” "
July 21 WickedLocal: Wayland residents blast committee over district practices
"“These are all symptoms of a bigger management problem,” resident Kent George said, alluding to accounting issues and a recent audit that brought to light at least $20,000 missing from the school district’s METCO account. "
July 17 WickedLocal: Wayland reached $75K settlement with former athletic director
"Jamieson claimed she was fired in retaliation for disclosing recruiting violations by the football coach to the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association. "
July 16 WickedLocal: Debra Goldman of Wayland: School system in crisis
"Do not be complacent about this important issue. There is much more at stake here than Stephen Cass’ job. Our public school system is in crisis. "
July 16 WVN 836 ALERT: Federal investigation of Wayland athletics?
"The School Committee has called a meeting for Monday July 20 at the unusual time of 2 p.m. The agenda is entirely about the recent allegations by Stephen Cass, who says he lost his job as athletic director after calling attention to irregular and possibly illegal behavior in high school athletic programs. "
July 16 WickedLocal: Wayland School Committee to respond to former athletic director
"The Wayland School Committee will discuss a response to former Athletic Director Stephen Cass's allegations of improprieties in the Athletic Department, including coaches being paid under the table by parents and resources skewed toward boys' teams over girls' teams, on Monday at 2 p.m. at Wayland Town Building. "
July 16 WickedLocal: Why are Wayland schools contracting with Northeastern?
"It seems an unnecessary waste of time and money to determine what values our athletic program, just like every other program within the school system, should foster in our young people. "
July 16 WickedLocal: Wayland suspends business with school administrator's family amid ethics review
"The state’s conflict of interest law prohibits municipal employees from awarding contracts or approving payments to a business owned by an immediate family member. Violations are punishable with jail time and a fine of up to $10,000. "
July 15 WVN #602: Assistant principal implicated in AD allegations
"Among many allegations Stephen Cass made as he accused the administration of not renewing his contract as athletic director in retaliation for whistle-blowing was that an administrator whom he didn’t name was self-dealing, which is against state law. Even without the name, people who follow Wayland athletics knew that Cass was talking about Scott Parseghian, Wayland High School assistant principal and head football coach. "
Recent Correspondence to School Committee and Superintendent
Correspondence from residents, some anonymous, some not, all of it quite revealing
July 16 WickedLocal: Linda Segal of Wayland: Doing the right thing
"Parents hesitate to go on the record because of fear of reprisal…….Doing the right thing requires courage, persistence, and a degree of anonymity. State and federal agencies were established to protect anyone stepping forward with information, free from retaliation. "
July 16 WickedLocal: George Harris of Wayland: Leadership crisis in schools
"The School Committee lacks transparency, as evidenced by its numerous and unending violations of the Open Meeting Law. It has for years tolerated sloppy and sometimes nonexistent financial controls of its operations, including the still unexplained METCO director’s use of $20,440 of school funds to pay her personal credit cards while being unable or unwilling to produce supporting records. And it has recently come to light that hundreds of thousands of dollars held in school revolving funds are likely being withheld from taxpayers. "
